Right choice Sir, - The choice of Kapil Dev as the Indian Cricketer of the Century is quite appropriate. The Haryanvi is a legend. He has been chosen ahead of batting stalwarts like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar... This itself speaks of Kapil's calibre. After all that humiliation, involving his name in match-fixing, this honour should act as a balm. Thank you Kapil for all your contribution to cricket. Thanks to The Sportstar for a nice feature on this great all-rounder.
PRAVEEN JAKHAR, A grand show Sir, - Hearty congratulations to the Indian team for its win over England in the NatWest series final. It was heartening to see India win a tournament away from home. The young brigade of the Indian cricket team made history at Lord's. This day will remain etched in our memories forever. The batting display of Yuveraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif was quite entertaining. The youngsters were not overawed by the occasion, held on to their nerves and played like champions, steering the team to victory. They have proved themselves worthy of donning the Indian cap. The team played as a cohesive unit and has brought laurels to the country. Sourav Ganguly has done a commendable job as captain, leading the team to victory. The team now is blossoming under his captaincy. He has been a source of strength to his teammates. The Indians are heading in the right direction under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly. Good luck to the Indian team for its future endeavours.
M. AKHILA, The blossoming of youth Sir, - The triumph of the Indian team in the NatWest series in England was simply magnificent. It is a shot in the arm for Indian cricket. The team displayed spirit and character throughout the whole tournament. They not only batted, bowled and fielded well, but also showed that they had the guts and courage to come out of tough situations. However, the highlight of the Indian conquest was the performance of its young brigade. The youth had ample opportunities to perform and they really grabbed their chances. The exuberance of youth had pumped up the whole Indian team and it jelled together as a cohesive unit. The contributions of Yuveraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif and Virender Sehwag in batting and that of Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Nehra in bowling were quite significant. Besides, all the youngsters are very good fielders and exceptionally quick runners between the wickets. But the most striking aspect about these youngsters was their strength of character in times of adversity. They showed us that this Indian team can also win even without major contributions from their senior players.
SAMRAT CHANDA, Salute India Sir, - I salute India. You have done it. You have done it in grand style! When the Tendulkars and Dravids failed, the Yuverajs and Kaifs have done it! Congratulations to Ganguly and his team!
VENKATRAMAN, Well done India Sir, - It is commendable that India triumphed at Lord's, the headquarters of world cricket. The whole Indian team deserves every bit of praise. Special mention must be made of the team-man Rahul Dravid. This man can take on any role to suit Inida's needs. He took to wicketkeeping, to accommodate an extra batsman and what a difference Kaif has made!
H. GANESH PAI, It's Yuveraj not Dravid Sir, - There is an error in The Sportstar issue dated July 20. In the review of the NatWest Trophy tie between India and Sri Lanka (played at Edgbaston) it has been wrongly mentioned that Rahul Dravid got out when the Indian score was 150. Actually, it was Yuveraj Singh who got out at that score. Dravid added 29 runs for the sixth wicket with Kaif. He was dismissed for 64 with the Indian score at 179. The victory then was well in sight. Barring this mistake the review of the NatWest Trophy was really good.
K. PAUL ABRAHAM, Good coverage Sir, - This is to congratulate you on your excellent coverage of Wimbledon. Despite being dwarfed by the more popular event, the World Cup soccer, Wimbledon 2002 certainly produced some of the finest tennis. Tennis aficionados would however take offense to Rohit Brijnath saying that the women's tennis should send flowers to the Williams sisters for being watched. No individual is greater than the sport.
LAKSHMI SIVADASAN, An error Sir, - The Facts and Figures of FIFA World Cup, July 20th issue, was informative. But there is an error in that. In the Group C, Brazil-Costa Rica match, it has been wrongly mentioned that Roque Junior had scored one of the goals for Brazil. But actually, it was Junior, the left-wing back, who netted the goal.
