ARGENTINA beat Holland 4-3 on penalties in the final at Perth to win the women's World Cup hockey for the first time. The scores were tied 1-1 after extra time and after the first five penalties, taking the shoot-out to sudden-death. Argentina had been beaten in three previous World Cup finals before breaking though this time to claim their first major title. With this victory, Argentina became only the fourth country after Holland (five times), Australia (twice) and Germany (twice) to win the women's World Cup hockey.
China took the third position by beating Australia 2-0 in the match played for the bronze. It was Australia's worst finish in the World Cup since 1986.
A total number of 247 goals were scored — 193 in 56 league matches and 54 in 16 classification matches — in 72 matches at an average of 3.43 goals per match. 109 players scored these goals. South Africa's Pietie Coetzee topped the list with nine goals followed by Agustina Garcia of Argentina with eight goals. Ukraine's Natalya Vasyukova took the third spot with seven goals.
Besides two goalless encounters, 10 other matches ended in draws. The matches went into the tie-breaker in the United States-vs Japan, England-vs South Korea and Argentian-vs Holland encounters.
Argentina's Luciana Aymar was adjudged the player of the tournament.
