Cover Story
They have a lot to play for
Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis arrive at the World Cup through different routes, but hope to leave in the only way that makes everything worthwhile, a victory that will put the final stamp of approval on their greatness, writes Suresh Menon.

On The Ball
W.V. RAMAN COLUMN
Making one's own luck
This will be one World Cup where a side will need a certain amount of luck to back its ability. Once the tournament enters the knock-out phase the luck factor will play a significant role. But a champion side makes its own luck.

LONDON CALLING
Of fitness levels
Andy Flower has recently complained about the fitness of the one-time England all-rounder Samit Patel who is fat and not yet 30 and left him out of the World Cup party. Flower sees only one way to play: treading the fitness path as demonstrated by the Aussies in their all-conquering days. Over to Ted Corbett.

Football
Berbatov comes good
Manchester United is now in pole position in the EPL title race and Dimitar Berbatov is finally living up to his billing as the next Eric Cantona. Over to Daniel Till.
WHO REIGNS IN SPAIN
Future looks bright for Alcantara
Thiago Alcantara's ability to dribble at pace and pass with precision has seen him make 10 appearances for Barca's first team this season. He has drawn comparison with the likes of Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas, another product of La Masia, writes Danny Till.

Shooting
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Why the laxity in securing quota places?
Indian shooting's focus should have been on gaining as many quota places as possible for the London Olympics. With only two quota places secured so far — through Gagan Narang in air rifle and Hariom Singh in free rifle prone — there is a lot of anxiety as to whether India will be able to better its recent record of winning nine quota places for the Beijing Olympics. By Kamesh Srinivasan.
